How to add a grey background

1

Upload your photo

A product, a portrait or a pet. You can add several at once or paste them with Ctrl + V.

2

Pick the grey

Pearl, mid, charcoal, studio or spotlight. It applies to the photos you process next.

3

Download the PNG

The subject is cut out in your browser and placed on the grey, at your original photo's resolution.

Why do it with Pictulab

Free, no account

No sign-up and no watermark. The tool does not use tokens.

In your browser

Your photo is never uploaded: the cutout and the composition happen on your device.

Several sizes

Download the plain background in Full HD, 4K, square, vertical or product-photo size.

Neutral with any color

Grey does not compete with the product, so it works for a whole catalog as well as for a portrait.

When to use a grey background

Grey is the background you notice least: it does not tint the product or compete with its colors, so it works for catalogs with very different products and for understated portraits. A light grey looks almost white and still keeps the outline of white objects visible; a dark one gives the contrast of black with less harshness. If the marketplace requires pure white, use white background.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Adding the grey background and downloading the plain backgrounds is free and needs no account.

No. The background removal model downloads the first time and runs in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device. That is why the first photo takes a little longer.

Same color: grey is the British spelling and gray the American one. Whichever you searched for, these are the same backgrounds.

Pearl grey (#D9D9D9) is close to white without being white and looks clean. Mid grey (#808080) is the RGB midpoint (128, 128, 128). Charcoal (#36454F) is a dark grey with a hint of blue that makes light products stand out.

Yes: the studio background mimics the seamless grey paper used for portraits. If the photo is for an official document, check which background it requires first, since many ask for white or a very light tone.
