Vector is not always servable

SVG is the best technical option for logos and icons, but it is not always an available option. Many platforms reject it on security grounds, because an SVG can carry scripts inside it.

When that happens, WebP is the least-bad substitute: it keeps transparency like PNG and weighs far less.

Why not just go to PNG

PNG is the reflex when rasterising a vector, and it works, but for web use it is an expensive choice. A transparent logo in PNG can weigh several times what the same logo does in WebP.

If the destination is a page, that difference shows up in load time and therefore in Core Web Vitals.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just serve the SVG?

When you can, do — it is smaller and infinitely scalable. But there are contexts where it does not fit: third-party platforms, email templates, some CMSs and certain marketplaces block SVG for security reasons.

WebP or PNG as the target?

WebP if it is going on a website: 30–50 % smaller with the same transparency. PNG if it is going to a desktop editor or an older system that will not recognise WebP.

Is transparency preserved?

Fully. WebP has an 8-bit alpha channel, so the vector’s soft edges survive.

Why do some platforms block SVG?

Because an SVG is an XML document that can contain JavaScript. Serving user-uploaded SVGs without sanitising them opens the door to attacks, so many platforms reject the format outright.
