Vectorising is not renaming

Search for "png to svg" and you will find plenty of tools that simply embed the PNG inside an SVG container. The file ends in .svg, but scale it up and it pixelates exactly like the original, because inside it is still the same bitmap.

Real vectorisation analyses the image, groups pixels into colour regions and describes the outline of each region as a mathematical curve. That SVG genuinely scales to any size and can be edited point by point.

Why you want the logo in vector form

Printers ask for vector because they need sharpness at sizes a 500 px PNG cannot survive: a banner, vehicle signage, an exhibition stand. Embroidery and vinyl cutting accept nothing else, because the machine follows paths.

It is also what lets you change a brand colour without redoing the artwork: in an SVG you edit the path fill and you are done.

Tune the detail to the image

The trade-off is always the same: more colours and finer thresholds give an SVG closer to the original but heavier and harder to edit. Fewer colours give a clean, workable file that loses nuance.

For a two- or three-colour corporate logo, the "Logo" preset usually nails it first time. For an illustration with shading, try "Detailed".

Frequently asked questions

Is this real vectorisation or does it just wrap the PNG?

Real vectorisation. A lot of online converters cheat: they wrap the bitmap in an image tag inside an SVG, which still pixelates when you scale it. Here the outline of every colour region is traced and fitted to Bézier curves.

Which images vectorise well?

Flat colours with clear edges: logos, icons, type, silhouettes, flat-style illustrations. A photograph can be vectorised, but you get a mosaic of colour blobs, not a photo.

Can I recover the original logo if I only have the PNG?

You recover a very close reconstruction, provided the PNG has enough resolution and clean edges. It is not mathematically the designer’s original file, but for reprinting or scaling up it is usually indistinguishable.

Why is the SVG sometimes heavier than the PNG?

Because every colour region becomes a path with dozens of points. Noise, gradients or texture produce thousands of paths. Drop the detail level to "Logo" or "Poster" for a far lighter file.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes — transparent areas generate no paths, so the SVG keeps the transparent background of the source PNG.
