PNG as a working format
The real benefit of converting JPG to PNG is not the starting quality, which is identical, but what happens next. A JPG is re-compressed every time you save it: after five edits the image carries visible accumulated damage.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No, and this matters: PNG preserves exactly what was in the JPG, artefacts included. What you gain is that it will not degrade any further from here.
Then why convert at all?
To edit. Every time you save a JPG it is re-compressed and loses a little more. If you are making several editing passes, moving to PNG freezes the current quality and stops the damage accumulating.
Will the PNG be bigger?
Yes, considerably — typically three to ten times. That is the price of storing every pixel losslessly. It is why PNG is a working format, not a delivery format for photos.
Do I gain transparency by converting?
PNG supports transparency, but the JPG had none to preserve, so the image comes out opaque. To cut out the background, use the background removal tool afterwards.
Is the resolution kept?
Yes, exactly the same. The conversion does not resample anything.
