When JPG is the right call and when it is not
JPG wins clearly on photographs: continuous tones, smooth gradients, lots of nuance. Its compression was designed for exactly that kind of image, and the size saving is enormous with no visible difference.
It loses on the opposite case: screenshots, charts, text, logos, anything with flat colour areas and hard edges. There JPG introduces visible artefacts around the edges and compresses worse than PNG.
Transparency is lost, and that is unavoidable
The JPG format has no alpha channel. This is not a limitation of this tool — no converter can store transparency in a JPG, because the format does not allow for it.
If your goal is a smaller file with the transparent background intact, the right format is WebP: it compresses like JPG and keeps alpha like PNG.
Why you keep being asked for it
Plenty of government forms, job platforms and older document systems accept JPG only. It is also the usual requirement for profile photos and for attachments with tight size limits.
In those cases converting is not an optimisation — it is the only way the file gets accepted at all.

How much smaller will the file get?
On photographs, 60–90 %. PNG stores every pixel exactly; JPG discards detail the eye barely registers. On screenshots or flat-colour graphics the saving is far smaller, and sometimes the JPG is actually bigger.
What happens to transparency?
JPG does not support it, so transparent areas are filled with white. If you need the transparent background kept, the right conversion is to WebP, which does have an alpha channel.
Is the quality loss noticeable?
At high quality, not to the naked eye on a normal photo. Where it does show is around text edges and sharp lines on flat colour, which pick up halos. For screenshots, stay on PNG.
Can I convert the JPG back to PNG?
You can, but you will not get back what was lost: the JPG already discarded information, and the resulting PNG only preserves that degraded version. Always keep the original PNG if you might need it.
Is there a file or size limit?
