The iPhone format Windows does not understand
Since iOS 11 the iPhone saves photos as HEIC, a format built on the HEVC video codec that takes roughly half the space of a JPG at the same quality. For phone storage that is excellent news.
The problem shows up when you move photos to a Windows PC, upload them to a site or attach them to a form: outside the Apple world, almost nothing recognises them.
PNG when you are going to edit
PNG’s advantage over JPG here is not the starting quality, which is identical, but what happens next. A JPG is re-compressed every time you save it; a PNG is not.
If the photo is an intermediate step — you will crop it, retouch it, composite it — PNG prevents the damage from accumulating.
Your photos are not uploaded
HEIC decoding happens entirely in your browser. With personal photos, it matters that they do not end up on someone else’s server.

Why will my PC not open HEIC files?
Because Apple adopted it as the iOS default but Windows does not ship with support: it needs a paid codec from the Store. Outside the Apple ecosystem, HEIC is effectively unreadable.
PNG or JPG for my iPhone photos?
JPG for ordinary photos you will share or archive — far smaller. PNG if you will edit, crop or composite them, since it does not degrade with each save.
Will the PNG be huge?
Quite: a 3 MB HEIC photo can become a 20 MB PNG or more. HEIC is very efficient and PNG does not compress lossily.
Is quality lost?
No loss is added. The PNG keeps exactly what the decoder pulled out of the HEIC.
Can I avoid HEIC at source?
Yes: on the iPhone, Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. From then on photos are saved as JPG directly.
