Far lighter files, transparent background intact, supported by every current browser.

The problem WebP solves

For years, any image with a transparent background was stuck with PNG, and PNG does not compress lossily: a large logo or a cut-out product could outweigh the page’s hero photo.

The only alternative was moving to JPG and losing the transparency, which was almost never acceptable. WebP broke that deadlock by combining aggressive compression with an alpha channel.

Where it shows most

On product catalogues with cut-out backgrounds, logo galleries, interface iconography and any page stacking several transparent images. There the cumulative saving changes load time noticeably.

On a small PNG with few colours the gain is smaller, because PNG already compresses that case well.

Local, batch conversion

Everything runs in the browser, so you can convert an entire site’s image directory without uploading anything. No file count limit and no maximum size imposed.

Frequently asked questions

Is transparency preserved?

Yes, and that is the whole point of this conversion. WebP supports an 8-bit alpha channel just like PNG, so soft edges and partial transparency survive.

How much do I save over PNG?

It depends on the content. On flat-colour logos and icons, 30–50 %. On gradients or cut-out photographs, it can exceed 70 %.

Is it lossy or lossless?

This tool uses lossy WebP at high quality, which is what delivers the large saving. WebP also has a lossless mode, but the gain over PNG would be much smaller.

Why bother if PNG already works?

For your site’s speed. Transparent PNGs are usually among the heaviest files on a page, and until WebP there was no way to slim them down without losing the transparent background.

What if I need the PNG back?

You can convert back with the WebP to PNG tool, though you will not recover what the compression discarded. Keep the original PNGs as your working copies.
