When PNG is the right target
The practical difference between converting a WebP to PNG or to JPG is transparency. If the WebP has a transparent background — a logo, an icon, a cut-out product — JPG will fill it with white and ruin the cut-out.
PNG keeps the alpha channel, so the image still works for compositing, dropping into a deck or using in a design.

PNG if the image has a transparent background or is a graphic, logo or screenshot. JPG if it is a photograph with no transparency and file size matters to you.
Is transparency preserved?
Fully. PNG has an 8-bit alpha channel just like WebP, so partial transparency and soft edges survive exactly as they were.
Do I lose quality?
No new loss is introduced: PNG stores exactly the pixels the decoded WebP contained. If the source WebP was lossy, those artefacts were already there and are preserved.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
Because it applies no lossy compression. A 200 KB WebP can become a 1.5 MB PNG. That is normal, and it is the price of losing nothing.
Does it work on animated WebP?
The first frame is converted. Standard PNG does not store animation.
