The most efficient format almost nothing opens
AVIF came out of the AV1 video codec and is today the best-compressing image format available on the web: around 50 % more efficient than JPG at equivalent perceived quality.
Browsers adopted it quickly; the rest of the ecosystem did not. The result is the familiar situation — you save an image from a site, end up with a .avif and find your computer has no idea what to do with it.
Converting means reading, not writing
Modern browsers decode AVIF perfectly well, and that is what this tool relies on. What none of them can do yet is encode it: there is no API for generating an AVIF from the browser.
That is why you will find plenty of tools converting AVIF to other formats and very few going the other way without a server behind them.

What is an AVIF file?

Why can I not open an AVIF?
Because support outside the browser lags badly. Desktop viewers, older editors and most web forms still do not recognise it, so the downloaded image is useless until you convert it.
Can I convert an image to AVIF with this tool?
No, and no browser-only converter can do it today: browsers can read AVIF but not write it. If you are after compression for your site, WebP is the viable conversion.
Do I lose quality converting to JPG?
Some, from chaining two lossy compressions. At high quality the difference is not noticeable on a normal photo.
Will the JPG be bigger?
Considerably — around double. AVIF is far more efficient. You are converting for compatibility, not for size.
