When PNG beats JPG as a target
AVIF supports transparency, and plenty of images served by modern sites use it: logos, icons, cut-out products. Convert one of those to JPG and the background gets filled with white, destroying the cut-out.
PNG keeps the alpha channel intact, so the image still works for layering over another background or dropping into a design.
Reading AVIF is easy, writing it is not
Modern browsers decode AVIF without trouble, which is what this tool relies on. Encoding is another matter: there is no API for generating an AVIF from the browser, so conversions towards AVIF need a server.
That is why tools converting out of AVIF are everywhere and tools converting into it are rare.

PNG or JPG for converting an AVIF?
PNG if the image has a transparent background, is a graphic, or you plan to edit it. JPG if it is an opaque photograph and the final file size matters.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. AVIF supports an alpha channel and so does PNG, so cut-outs and soft edges survive intact.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
Because it does not compress lossily. AVIF is the most efficient format on the web today, so the difference can be five to ten times.
Do I lose quality?
No new loss is added: the PNG keeps exactly the pixels of the decoded AVIF. If the AVIF was lossy, those artefacts were already there.
Can I go the other way?
Not from the browser. No browser can encode AVIF yet, only read it. To compress your own images, WebP is the viable conversion.
