The format with no compression
BMP stores literally every pixel, one after another, with no compression algorithm at all. That makes it trivial for any program to read, which is why it survives in industrial and scientific settings.
It also makes it the heaviest format you will encounter: tens of megabytes for an image any other format would store in one or two.

JPG compression discards the high-frequency detail the human eye barely registers. Starting from an uncompressed BMP, that produces spectacular reductions with no visible difference.

How much space will I save?

Is the quality loss noticeable?
