A format still alive for a reason
BMP looks obsolete, and for general use it is. But in embedded systems and industrial equipment it has a virtue that is hard to match: reading it needs no library at all. The pixels are right there, raw, behind a 54-byte header.
That is why it remains the input format for a good deal of control software, machine vision and laboratory equipment.
The details that make a BMP valid
The format has quirks you have to respect: rows are stored bottom-up, channels go blue-green-red, and each row is padded to a multiple of four bytes.
Break any of those rules and you produce a file that opens skewed, with inverted colours, or does not open at all.

Is it a real BMP?
Yes. The format header is written and the pixels are laid out in the order the standard requires. Worth clarifying because browsers cannot generate BMP and many online converters hand over a PNG with the extension changed.
Does converting improve quality?
No. BMP does not compress, but that does not recover what the JPG already discarded. You keep exactly the image you had, artefacts included.
Why 24-bit rather than 32?
Because 32-bit BMP with an alpha channel requires an extended header that plenty of programs read badly. The 24-bit version opens absolutely everywhere, which is the whole reason someone asks for a BMP.
How big will it be?
Large: width × height × 3 bytes. A 4000 × 3000 image takes about 36 MB. That is inherent to the format.
What is BMP used for today?
Industrial control software, measurement equipment, embedded systems and older applications that need to read pixels without implementing a decompressor.
