The graphics industry’s format
TIFF has been the standard container for publishing and prepress since 1986. Its virtue is not efficiency but fidelity and flexibility: it takes any colour depth, ICC profiles, extra channels and multiple images in one file.
When a printer asks for TIFF they are not being old-fashioned — they are asking for the format their workflow can process without surprises.
Uncompressed, deliberately
This converter generates uncompressed TIFF. LZW or Deflate could be applied to shrink it, but not every baseline reader supports them, and the goal here is maximum compatibility.
The file is bigger, but any program that understands TIFF will open it — which was the point of converting.

Is it a real TIFF?
Yes, a baseline TIFF with a complete image file directory. We say so because browsers cannot generate TIFF and online converters commonly return a renamed PNG.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. Four channels are written and the fourth is marked as unassociated alpha, which is how Photoshop and GIMP expect it.
Why does the printer ask for TIFF?
Because it is the traditional prepress format: lossless, with support for colour profiles and layers, and readable by all professional software going back decades.
How big will it be?
Width × height × 4 bytes, uncompressed. A 4000 × 3000 image runs around 48 MB. That is the price of losing nothing.
Is it better quality than the PNG?
No: both are lossless, so the image is identical. What changes is the format, not the content.
