Old web graphics that need a second life
For years, logos, icons and buttons were published as GIFs because it was the format with transparency that every browser understood. Many still exist only that way, at 100 or 200 pixels.
Enlarged, they show stair-stepped edges. Vectorising them turns them into outlines that scale to any size – useful for rebuilding a website, printing, or reusing an icon in another project.
A limited palette is an advantage
A GIF has at most 256 colours, and graphics usually use far fewer. That means uniform colour regions and defined edges, the ideal input for a vectoriser.
The enemy is dithering: where the GIF faked a gradient by mixing pixels of two colours. There it pays to lower the detail so the pattern merges into a solid colour instead of thousands of tiny paths.
Animations: first frame only
An SVG generated here is a static image. If you upload an animated GIF, the first frame is vectorised and the rest is discarded.
If the frame you want is a different one, extract it first as a still image, for example a PNG, and vectorise that.

Is the animation kept?
No. For an animated GIF only the first frame is vectorised, and the result is a static SVG. If you need a different frame, extract it as a still image first and upload that.
Why does a GIF vectorise so well?
Because GIF is limited to 256 colours and was almost always used for flat graphics: icons, logos, headings. Those areas of uniform colour are exactly what the tracer turns into clean curves.
My GIF has dithering dots – what should I do?
Many GIFs fake in-between colours with dithering: alternating pixel patterns of two colours. In "Detailed" mode each dot can end up as a path. Use "Logo" or "Poster" so they merge into solid colours.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. Transparent areas of the GIF produce no paths, so the SVG keeps a transparent background. Watch the edges: GIF only supports fully transparent or fully opaque pixels, and sometimes carries a jagged fringe of the background colour it was designed for.
Is the GIF uploaded to a server?
