From vector logo to favicon in one step
This is the most common case: you have the logo as an SVG, you are launching a website and the favicon.ico is missing. Exporting each size by hand from an editor and then packing them together is tedious.

What you lose going from vector to pixels
An SVG is a set of drawing instructions; an ICO stores pixels. Once converted, the logo is no longer scalable: each size in the .ico is fixed at its resolution.
That is why the SVG should stay your master file, with the ICO treated purely as an output. If the logo changes, convert again from the SVG, never from the ICO.
Designing for 16 pixels
A vector that looks perfect full-screen guarantees nothing at 16×16. Thin strokes vanish and small gaps close up.
If the result is not legible, simplify the SVG: thicken lines, remove details and keep only the symbol. That is why so many brands use a favicon that differs from their full logo.

Why do I need an ICO if I already have the SVG?
Many browsers accept SVG favicons, but support is not universal: Windows does not use SVG for application icons, and some browsers, feed readers and tools still request /favicon.ico. Having both covers every case.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. Unfilled areas of the SVG stay transparent at every size in the .ico, so the icon sits on the tab or taskbar without a box around it.
My logo includes the brand name – will it be readable?
At 16 or 32 pixels, almost certainly not. The vector scales without limit, but the screen does not: at that size only a few shapes fit. Export an SVG with just the symbol or initial and convert that.
The ICO comes out blank or different from the SVG – why?
This usually happens with SVGs that depend on external resources, such as web fonts or linked images, which do not load when rasterising. Convert text to outlines and save a self-contained SVG before uploading.
Is the logo uploaded to a server?
No. Rasterising and packing happen in your browser; the SVG never leaves your device.
