Where BMPs come from
Hardly anyone saves as BMP on purpose any more, but they keep turning up: older scanners with their bundled software, screenshots saved from Paint, exports from technical or machine software.

Is the PDF smaller than the BMP?
Usually, yes. A BMP stores pixels uncompressed; inside the PDF the image is stored as PNG, which compresses losslessly. With screenshots and documents with lots of white the difference tends to be large; with photos, smaller.
Is quality lost?
No. Going from BMP to PNG is lossless: every pixel reaches the PDF exactly as it was.
What if the BMP is small?
It is enlarged to fill the width or height of the page. An image a few hundred pixels across will look pixelated when printed on A4, because there is no more detail to show.
What if the image is landscape?
The page is always portrait A4. A landscape image fills the full width and leaves white bands above and below; it is not rotated.
Can I combine several BMPs into one PDF?
