From photo to icon: when it makes sense
Some icons start life as a photo: a face for a profile shortcut, the best-selling product for a small shop's favicon, a picture to tell a project folder apart in Windows. In those cases, the JPG is what you have to hand.
What matters is choosing a crop that survives the reduction. At 16 or 32 pixels, only a central shape with contrast is recognisable; crop the photo down to that before converting.
The photo's background travels with the icon
JPG has no alpha channel: every pixel is opaque. So the resulting ICO is opaque too, and the icon will appear as a square with the photo's background on the taskbar or the browser tab.
For an icon made from a photo that is usually fine. For a logo that should float without a box, find the original as a PNG or SVG, which do keep transparency.
Six sizes in a single file
Windows and browsers pick the size according to where the icon is shown: 16 px in the tab, 32 on the taskbar, 256 in large icon view. That is why the .ico includes 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px.

Will the icon have a transparent background?
No. JPG does not store transparency, so the icon comes out with whatever background the photo has, usually a white or coloured square. If you need an icon without a box around it, start from a PNG or SVG with transparency.
My JPG is rectangular – will it be cropped?
No. The image is fitted and centred on a square canvas without distortion, so margins remain at the sides or at the top and bottom. If you want it to fill the whole icon, crop it to a square before converting.
Why does the icon look blurry at 16 px?
Because shrinking a photo to 16×16 pixels leaves very little information. Images with a clear central subject and strong contrast work best; a landscape or a full-length portrait turns into a smudge.
Is it a real ICO or a renamed JPG?
It is a real ICO: a container with an ICONDIR header describing the six sizes inside it. Windows and favicon validators recognise it as an icon.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The six sizes and the container are generated in your browser; the image never leaves your device.
