Why anyone goes from PNG to BMP
PNG is the better format in almost every way: it compresses without losing anything and supports transparency. Nobody converts to BMP for fun, but because something on the other end only reads BMP.
That is usually industrial control software, laser engravers, label printers, embedded displays or firmware that shows a boot image: programs that read pixels directly, with no decompression library.
Transparency is what you lose
A logo or icon PNG almost always has a transparent background. A 24-bit BMP has no alpha channel, so that background has to become something: here it becomes white, and anti-aliased edges are blended into that white.
If the target shows the image on a dark background, you'll see a white box around it. In that case, prepare the PNG with the background you need first.

What happens to the PNG's transparency?
It's lost. A 24-bit BMP has no alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas are blended with a white background. A white logo on a transparent background will disappear: give it a colored background first.
Do I lose quality going from PNG to BMP?
Not in the colors: both formats store pixels losslessly, and the BMP keeps them as they are. The only thing that changes is transparency, which gets flattened.
Why is the BMP so much bigger than the PNG?
Because PNG compresses losslessly and BMP doesn't compress at all. A 1920 × 1080 screenshot that may take a few hundred KB as PNG becomes about 6 MB as BMP (width × height × 3 bytes).
Are the pixel dimensions kept?
Yes. The BMP has the same width and height as the PNG, with no resizing or cropping.
Is it a real BMP or a renamed PNG?
A real one. Browsers can't generate BMP, so the header and pixels are written by hand, in the order the format requires. Many converters hand out a PNG renamed to .bmp, and software that expects BMP rejects it.
