When BMP is the only option
Nobody picks BMP for its strengths: it is heavy and uncompressed. It gets picked because some programs read nothing else — decades-old software, machine controllers, embedded displays or in-house applications written when BMP was Windows' native format.
If your destination accepts PNG or JPG, use PDF to PNG or PDF to JPG instead: the result looks the same and takes up far less space.
What you lose going from PDF to BMP
The layout stays exactly as it is in the reader, but the document stops being a document. The text layer, the links and the ability to zoom without losing sharpness all go: a BMP has a fixed resolution, the one it was rendered at, about 144 dots per inch.
If the target program shows the image heavily enlarged, the pixels will show.

Why BMP and not PNG?
If you have the choice, PNG: the same sharpness at a fraction of the size. BMP makes sense when the target program accepts nothing else, which is common with older Windows software, industrial equipment and some engraving or embroidery programs.
What kind of BMP does it create?
A 24-bit-per-pixel BMP, uncompressed and without a palette: the most basic variant of the format, which practically any viewer or editor can open, even very old ones.
How big is each page?
An A4 page at this resolution is around 6 MB, because every pixel takes three uncompressed bytes. A PDF with many pages produces a large ZIP.
Is the text still selectable?
No. A BMP is just pixels: what used to be text becomes part of the image and can no longer be searched or copied.
What about transparency?
A 24-bit BMP has no alpha channel. Pages are painted on a white background, which is how they look when printed.
